Let's Get Talking: Using AAC in the Classroom     3.0 CEUs             Content Area I for SLP

                         Abstract: This implementation class will focus on using AAC in the classroom during speaking, reading and writing activities. Participants will learn about the importance of language development                            and core vocabulary, teaching methods to promote the use of core vocabulary across environments and strategies to engineer the classroom. In addition, participants will learn how to select                                    target vocabulary for classroom activities based on language development principles. Methods for finding and teaching vocabulary will be covered, including icon tutor/word finder, vocabulary                                  builder and write with icons. Finally, attendees will learn how to set up and delivery activities to foster communication. Practical examples and materials will be used throughout the class. The                                   strategies presented will cover a range of communicative abilities and can be applied to a variety of language systems and communication devices.

                         Devices for this training are optional. If you choose to bring a device, please bring an Accent 800/1000/1400 or PRiO with the most current software version available. Participants can bring a PC                             laptop computer pre-loaded with PASS demo software for Accent. If you want to use a Mac laptop you will need a Windows emulator with PASS installed. PASS software is not compatible with                                iPads. This is not an iPad training.

                         This training is appropriate for any individual working with students who use communication devices in a classroom setting.

                         Learning Outcomes- Participants will be able to:

1. State the connections between early speech and language development and AAC

2. Define and give examples of core and fringe vocabulary

3. Identify one way to engineer the classroom to promote use of core vocabulary

4. Select appropriate vocabulary to target during speaking, reading, and writing activities

5. Find and create supports for that vocabulary

6. Set up and deliver activities to foster communication and vocabulary learning

Building Blocks to AAC: Block 3 Taking Stock, Writing Relevant Goals, & Delivering Meaningful Activities     2.0 hours     Content Area I for SLP

Abstract: In this two hour block on augmentative alternative communication (AAC), participants will learn tools to help determine the language level of the person who uses AAC and how to write relevant goals and deliver meaningful activities. To help determine language level and AAC usage, participants will learn about a classroom screener, a communication forms/functions checklist and Realize Language™. Once current language level and AAC usage are defined, relevant goals can be written. This class will review goal writing for speaking, reading and writing. The class will conclude by reviewing how to deliver goal driven activities in a motivating and meaningful way. Through demonstration, video and practice exercises, participants will learn about the fundamentals of AAC intervention. 

This class is intended for anyone interested in learning about the fundamentals of AAC.

Learning Outcomes- Participants will be able to:

1. Determine the language level of a learner

2. Write three relevant communication/language goals for a learner

3. Deliver three engaging activities for a learner

Learns, Learning, Learned: Expanding Language with Magical Morphemes        1.0 hour     Content Area I for SLP

Abstract: This 90-minute implementation class focuses on expressive language development and targeted activities to increase the language complexity of AAC communicators. Participants will learn about language stages and tools to help develop goals and track progress.  Numerous resources, including lessons from the AAC Language Lab, engaging iPad apps, and hands-on activities for all ages will be shared in this interactive session. Participants will also learn how data logging with Realize Language can help guide their treatment plans and monitor growth.

This class provides resources and strategies that speech-language pathologists, educators and parents can use for teaching more complicated language structures to individuals currently using at least two word phrases on their speech generating devices.

Learning Outcomes:  Participants will be able to:

1. Define morphology and morphemes

2. Explain how children learn morphemes

3. Plan activities targeting a variety of language structure
